PRODUCTION DIARY #7: Paul Welsh MBE on Why the World’s Greatest Filmmakers Love Working at Elstree

Paul Welsh MBE reflects on why some of the biggest names in film and television have loved working at Elstree Studios and why so many keep returning, year after year.

Paul got to know Peter Cushing while he worked with Hammer Films and other producers at Elstree. Recently Paul kindly recorded an interview for our upcoming documentary, PETER CUSHING: In His Own Words.

Paul is a film historian and writer, who led the campaign in the late 1990s to save Elstree Studios when the owners allowed it to get run down and it was feared that the studios may close for ever. Paul’s amazing efforts were recognised and he was awarded the MBE by the Queen.

We’re currently in the process of filming contributions for the documentary and each week we’re publishing a short PRODUCTION DIARY on YouTube and our website. The diaries go behind the scenes of the production and introduce the people who are taking part and the lovely locations that we get to visit.

Our other PRODUCTION DIARIES include episodes with former Hammer stars and Bond girls Madeline Smith and Valerie Leon, actor Derek Fowlds, The Hammer Runners, Phil Campbell and Brian Reynolds, as well as two special editions with Elstree Studios’ chairman, Morris Bright.
